Advances in contact lens and lens care technologies over the last few decades have further improved the safety and efficacy of contact lens wear. Even with the improved oxygen transmissibility of silicone hydrogel materials and the ease-of-use and more effective disinfection of today's lens care solutions, some adverse responses with contact lenses still occur. As such, the use of antimicrobial surfaces and materials for contact lenses, and lens cases, is being explored in an effort to further enhance the safety profile of contact lenses.
Lynn Winterton is currently the Global Head of Strategy and External Alliances for the Research and Development Function at CIBA VISION Corporation, Atlanta, Georgia, USA.. Before talking this current position, Lynn Winterton was the Global Head of Research and a Distinguished Research Fellow at CIBA VISION. He graduated Magna cum Laude in 1980 from the University of Utah with a Bachelor of Science degree in Materials Science and Engineering. In 1984 he earned his Ph.D. in Materials Science and Engineering with specialties in (polymeric) biomaterial surface interactions and pharmaceutics. He is a Fellow of the British Contact Lens Association (FBCLA), a member of the National Engineering Honor Society (Tau Beta Pi), a member of the International Society for Contact Lens Research (ISCLR), a member the Surfaces in Biomaterials Foundation, a member of the American Chemical Society, and affiliated with other technical societies.
